Loreal Wild Ombre Dip-Dye Kit - Full Review!

Hey there lovely people!!
I came across something very exciting when i was browsing the Superdrug website the other day (as i regularly do...i'm not addicted...), a kit from Loreal that makes it easy for you to ''ombre'' or ''dip-dye'' your own hair!
It's called Loreal Preference Wild Ombre kit, and it looks a little bit like this!

How pretty is that packaging for a start?! and of course the woman on the front is impossibly beautiful, the lucky duck!
I got it in version number 1, for light brown to dark brown hair, but there is also version 2 for dark blonde to medium brown and version 3 for blonde to dark blonde.
I'll warn you now that this is a pretty extensive review, with a LOT of pictures, i wanted to give you as much detail as i could seen as this is a really new product :)
This is everything you get inside:

They have quite in depth instructions, their wording is a little bit hard to understand at times but nothing too bad!

This is all you get in the box, plus the very special applicator brush! More on what you do with this later.
Now i'll show you the colour of my hair before i used the dye, so you can get some idea of how much it lightens your hair;

Pretty dark! These pictures make it look slightly darker than it actually is but still you can see it's a pretty deep chocolate brown.
Excuse my snazzy towel and hair clip combo i'm sporting, i was trying to protect my pyjama top haha!
Now onto application!!
I'll roughly run through what you have to do, along with a few instructional pictures :)
Firstly you have to part your hair down the middle at the back, and bring the two sections round the front at either side, it makes it easier to comb the product through.

First, you take the nozzle off the developer cream bottle and you pour the lightening powder into the developer cream.

Then you squeeze the lightening cream into the developer cream bottle as well!
Then screw the top back on and first shake it side to side and then vigorously (oo-er) up and down.

Make sure you twist the nib off straight away when you've screwed the top back on otherwise the pressure will build up and cause a extremely messy explosion (i speak from experience, don't ask), but mind your fingers because it oooozes (hate that word!!) out when you remove it.

Now it's time to GLOVE UP with your very snazzy/slightly like something a bin man would wear black gloves!

Now this is where the brush comes in! You take your developer cream and squeeze the dye all over this brush, coating it completely, and then run it through the lengths all the way to the ends of your hair (starting up as high as you would like your ombre), i found it easiest to work from the back of my head to the front.

This is what mine looked like when i was finished spreading the dye! I used my gloved hand to smear more on the ends of my hair than i had further up, just because i wanted it to be lighter there.
The brush is good in some ways, coats the top layers of your hair really well and evenly, but i found i had to section my hair off and some of the undersides were completely dry! maybe i was doing it wrong though so don't judge the product too harshly.

Then i waited 45 minutes to get the maximum amount of lightening, and this is what the dye looked like after that long;
Ooooh i was so excited as it definitely looked lightened!!

Finally you have to rinse your hair with warm water and then use the above conditioning shampoo on it, this stuff works wonders! and you get loads in a bottle, i only used half of it and there was loads of bubbles on my head! haha.
Then just rinse the shampoo off and voila! Dyeing complete!
Then i toddled off to blowdry and straighten it and THIS was the final result;

Excuse my makeup-less face, it had been a long day at work haha!
As you can see it has been significantly lightened! I really like it, the closest to the actual colour could be the last two pictures above, a nice warm light brown, it's something a bit different and although i'm getting used to it i've ordered another box of this dye in case i feel like making it any lighter, what do you guys think?
My ends do feel a bit frazzled by the whole experience which is to be expected, but nothing i can't fix with a few intensive treatments from Aussie i'm sure! :)
After it has been properly styled THIS is the final result (last picture, i promise!!)
As you can see it looks less brassy, and a bit more girly-grunge :)
And that's my review!! A long one i know, i hope you enjoyed it nonetheless!
This is currently £5.99 in Superdrug, which is £1 off it's RRP, and they're also offering free delivery at the moment so i can't think of a better time to buy it if you're tempted! Click here to go straight to it and do just that :)

What do you think of my new hair? Honest opinions please! It is the best policy after all ;)
Do you think i should lighten it anymore or keep it as is? Comment below and share your thoughts with me, i always love to hear them :D

Hope you have a great weekend!

Where's your kit from? For a bleach kit this wasn't massively drying which i'm very glad about, my hair takes a pounding sometimes!! haha thank you :) i'm really loving it!

Yeah it doesn't seem to have had much fanfare thus far, maybe it'll be like the Rouge Caresse products which kind of crept onto the market and then suddenly Loreal launched a advertising campaign once it had been out a few months! haha think they need a new PR department!! Thank you, glad you like it :D

i might actually try this, it's so hard trying to lighten or dipdye dyed black or dark brown hair. everything else i've tried just turned it orange...

Thank-you for such a lovely review. I have ombred hair but after a trim at the hairdressers it's looking less ombred so I need to do it again and was tossing up between these packest and a normal bleaching packed (which is what I used last time). When I did mine I did it, rinsed and dried and then did it again and it worked a lot better the second time around.

I tried this on my hair tonight, and the result is awesome! I love it! It stinks bad, but I found sticking my head out the wwindow helps with that. My hair lifted nicely after 45 minutes, think I left it on for an extra 5 minutes. Recommend to anyone, never been this pleased with my hair even after spending £100 in a salon!! 10/10

Yeah i had colour on my hair and i'd coloured it pretty recently, but i'd advise waiting for a few washes after you've dyed it and not dying it straight after, just so you can get all the dark dye washed out properly before you put on the ombre kit, if you know what i mean :)

    Hey

    Loved your ombre post.

I previously ombre'd my hair 3/4 months ago using the darkest ombre shade kit and to start off with my hair looked great. But now I can see a lot of brassiness coming through and God forbid I look at the end of my hair during sunlight as I can see tinges of Orange... eeeek!

I want to go lighter on my ends but I know for a fact my hair cannot go through another ombre experience as it dried out the ends out last time making my hair brittle and riddled with split ends.

I'm guessing that the ombre kit just has bleach in it and not any colour right? Would it be ok to dye the ends of my hair a light brown colour using a semi permanent hair dye?

Hope to hear what you think I should do... especially before I end up reaching for my natural hair colour dye (Clairol Perfect 10 Medium Brown) and colouring it all one colour again :-(

Thank you Manny!! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
Yeah the ombre kit is just bleach, the standard lightening powder and lightening creme you get in most bleaching kits.
You could dye your hair with a light brown dye, but you should be aware that when your hair is bleached or dry it's more porous, which means it'll absorb the colour quicker, so i would keep a keen eye on the dye when it's on your hair, and leave it on for less than the time it advises on the packet, because you could end up with really dark ends because your ends have absorbed the colour far too much.
In my experience less than half the dyeing time they usually recommend would be ok, but as i say keep an eye on the colour your hair is going and if it starts looking too dark then take it off straight away.

also for the brassiness, have you tried a purple shampoo? It seems to deal with the brassy notes in my hair really well! Most brands do one now, i've heard a lot of good things about the John Frieda and Lee Stafford ones, i use the Pro:Voke Touch Of Silver range which i bought from Sainsburys :)

I hope this helps in some way and that your hair turns out ok, keep me posted!! I find leaving conditioner on my hair overnight really helps nourish my bleached ends too, wearing a turby towel from Primark over the conditioner stops the messiness on your pillow haha!

      Thanks for your comment :)

Hmmmm may not dye the ends as I'm not a good keeper of time lol.

I've got the touch of silver shampoo but haven't used it as much to notice a change I guess.

If I were to dye my hair all one colour to my natural colour using Clairol Perfect 10 Medium Brown... would the ends of my hair where it's been bleached go darker than the top of my head?

      Manny xx

    3. AngieBeautyBelle8 February 2013 10:13

Haha it's easy to get distracted when you're dyeing your hair isn't it! Maybe, I find it makes the brassiness appear reduced but obviously it's not a miracle and eventually my hair gets so brassy it just needs ombreing again!
To dye over bleached hair it helps if you have a dye with red undertones, as opposed to ash, does it say anywhere on the box that its a ash? Cos ash colours neutralise red undertones, whereas red undertones neutralise brassiness in the hair.
I'd say the same as before though, keep an eye on your hair but my friend recently dyed over her dipdye with a dark brown dye and it was fine for her, her hair was all one colour :)

I reckon the lighter your hair obviously the lighter the bleach would make it go, I'm not sure of the difference in strengths of bleach in the different types of wild ombres you can buy, I'd just go for the one that's suited to your hair type, so the one I used for my hair sounds like it'd do for you, or the number 2, just to be on the safe side :) xxx

however my previous hair colour was red, dyed deep red which you can still vaguely see underneath.
do you reckon this would work on my hair or would the lightener just bring out the red underneath?

    yours looks fab btw

      Hi there!
All this dye does is lighten the colour your hair already is, so if there's red tones in your hair I'd expect it'd lighten them and bring them out, making it gingery.
You might have to use two packs, like I did, although don't use them in quick succession, give your hair some recovery time because bleach is extremely damaging to it!
Hope this is helpful :) If you have anymore questions don't hesitate to ask!

hey, loved the review and the pictures really helped :) do you know of any temporary dip dyes? I'm going to Italy with a friend for two weeks in summer (so lucky) and we both decided to use a temporary dip dye whilst on the trip! If you have any ideas, please reply or email at: [email protected] because your opinion on what to use would be much appreciated :)

    thanks!

also, both of us have never dyed before, and at first I wondered if this product was temporary too! would be great if you could suggest some with no ammonia, as my friend has very "sensitive" hair and would like to try one with none for the first time :)
      thanks again!

It's bleach, so it'll last until it grows out or you dye over it!
      Thanks :)

It is scary but as long as you're careful it'll be fine :)

Hi, i have hair the same as you, dark brown, but i was wondering do you know how i could get it lighter ,cause i want light blonde at the end rather than ginger/light brown?

    Thanks :)

I would say you would have to bleach it twice with this kit, once won't give you a light blonde colour!
